Miranda Seymour on the Royal Society of Literature
Why has the RSL failed to uphold the principle of artistic freedom?
Earlier this week, I wrote an article about the infighting at the Royal Society of Literature and how its leadership has failed to defend writers and champion free speech.
And on tonight’s episode of Free Speech Nation, I was delighted to talk to the brilliant author and former fellow of the RSL, Miranda Seymour.
You can watch the interview in full here:
Miranda Seymour is both impressive and clearly a thoroughly decent human being. She at one point describes the RSL as running scared. It’s eerily similar to Jo Phoenix’s description of OE’s failure to uphold her free speech and defend her against harassment. A common thread of pure cowardice, it seems, is running through most organizations.
Bloody hell Andrew. I finish watching you on Free Speech Nation at 9pm and 12 minutes later I get the email from your substack about the interview I just watched. How do you do it? Is there more than one of you?
