Great conversation. I totally agree with your Free Speech arguments Brandenburg Test, Lucy Connolly etc... Loved the literary talk and poetic coping strategy of Philip Henry Gosse.

I think the only matter that makes me wonder whether there might be a problem, is the current omnipresent tsunami of violent anti-Israel and antisemitic rhetoric and media coverage. But then again, this is, in the case of the media coverage, a breech contract of sorts and not Free Speech matter. But I do wonder whether for some of the recently arrived Muslims or the ones that live in Muslim parallel societies speech of a third person is seen as more as an instruction to act. Much in the way the logic of fatwas are supposed to function and tragically sometimes actually do.

Andrew, I don’t recall Juliet’s mother having a lover’s tryst with Tybalt. It was a fun quirky addition to the show this afternoon.

Perhaps my recollection of R&J is off?

And speaking of Shakespeare, took my 8 year old granddaughter to Romeo & Juliet this afternoon. Brilliantly produced show by Alberta Ballet. Magnificent costumes, humour from Mercutio, and waaay too much kissing according to granddaughter.

Great podcast episode! I love your Shakespeare ranting.

I translate poetry for pleasure and I would like to share something with you as a translator. Translating poetry is a hard work because you have to get into the way of thinking of the poet and translate not only the words but the feeling. Usually translators only translate the words but don’t catch the feeling and you can tell when you read it. This is why not all translations of poetry are good - it depends on the translator.

If you have ever translated Shakespeare and Marlowe you would never even imagine they are the same person. Their way of thinking is quite different and they clearly have different personalities. I admit I absolutely love Marlowe. When I translate his works the words just flow and I don’t even need to think about it. Oh, how I regret he didn’t get the chance to write more! Shakespeare took me some time to get my head around his way of writing and thinking but I think I did a decent job at the end.

I think whoever came with these theories just wanted attention. The alternative is that they had no idea of poetry and that was their way to get away with it.

Sorry about the lengthy comment!

The (oestrogen-sensitive) dopaminergic left brain doesn't hold truth in high regard, while it processes 'reality' towards outcomes of benefit to ITSELF.

Truth, beauty, and seeking to understand principles 'beyond oneself' is the prerogative of the adrenergic, testosterone-sensitive right brain.

With regard to the irrelevance of truth in a world dominated by oestrogen, ladies and gentlemen, I give you feminist 'theory'.

With regard to recent events in Tumbler Ridge - it is perhaps unsurprising that if the hormonal balance in the brain is upset by extraneous input of 'transitioning hormones' with nowhere to go (no menstruation), and no natural receptors for these hormones in a male-patterned brain, that schizophrenia is a likely result.

Male patterned brains occur in utero. Sometimes, this goes wrong, as brains and genitalia develop independently, but with communication.

Sometimes, as Led Zep said, there can be a 'Communication Breakdown'. Here's a bit of an overview. I'm working on another one.
